Afloat Sushi is one of those Japanese places where the food goes around on a conveyer belt and you take what you want. We opted to sit at a table and ordered the deluxe combination dinner. It wasn't very deluxe. Four pieces of nearly tasteless sashimi, three pieces of spicy tuna roll good, but not enough , a small order of tempura very average , and a very bland chicken teriyaki poor , with 2 drinks beer or saki miso soup, rice, and salad.
FAST. FRESH. FUN.
Thankfully we had a Groupon coupon for half off. The place has a fast-food feel about it, with menus printed on big plastic cards. It was also virtually empty on a Tuesday night in Old Town there was one other group of diners. Not recommended.. Afloat Sushi is in Pasadena's Old Town which is fun to walk around, lots of shops, good for people watching at outdoor cafes etc. Public parking free the first 90 mins is less than 2 blocks away. The restaurant is store-front looking, a little bare, the tables for 2 are small, tables for 4 are perfect for 2 people ordering several plates.
We went on a Monday and it wasn't busy.
The sushi bar is on a convayor belt and plates of sushi move past the diner in boats. This is a good idea if you're in a hurry, maybe not so good an idea if you want freshly made sushi. The food is so-so quality wise. One problem with my dinner was a roll I ordered was too loosely rolled and began to fall apart when picked up. I'd eat there again if it was someone elses idea but I wouldn't suggest Afloat. This was an interesting place, the sushi floated by on boats hooked together and you just pick what you want and pay by the plate or order from the sushi chef off the menu.
They have different plate price options and different portion sizes which was great.
We went on a Tuesday night and there was a steady flow of people in there. I really enjoyed my short meal at Afloat Sushi. I dropped in with a friend for a quick meal. You pull items off of the boats that circle around the sushi bar as they strike your fancy.
I love the model, because I'm happy as a customer I know exactly what I'm getting , I don't have to wait for someone to take my order and paying is simple and fast. The food was a good value. The chefs were very fast with special orders that were not on the boats. I was very impressed, and generally enjoyed myself and the food. Own or manage this property?
